Österreichische Post and Bamomas extend partnership for 350 EVs after successful progress during the trial project

· News,Case study

Bamomas identified an opportunity to prolong the operational life of Post EVs by matching the vehicle to the right route and location resulting in 90% ROI and significant capital optimization.

In Nov 2022, Österreichische Post AG through Verbund X accelerator program, began its pilot project utilizing Bamomas battery analytics system in its EV fleet. Austrian postal service provider Österreichische Post AG is in the process of decarbonising its core business by switching their delivery fleet entirely to electric vehicles. This means that Austrian Post will grow its EV fleet from 3000 vehicles now to 10000 vehicles by 2030.

To make this transition even more sustainable and cost efficient, Bamomas conducted a trial project with Österreichische Post focused on providing battery state of health. The trial project between the two companies ran until March 2023 and involved a very close and rigorous cooperation which was facilitated by the mentors and coaches at Verbund X. At the end of the program, a demo day was organized during which companies shared their project learnings and outcomes.

According to Pavel Marek, CEO and co-founder of Bamomas:

“Electric vehicles are big batteries on wheels, if you want to optimize their costs and make sure that the total cost of ownership is low, you need to focus on the battery.”

Focusing on the battery requires having deep and accurate insight into battery health which is often missing. There are several reasons behind this such as the complications involved in manual estimations of battery state of health (SoH), as well as varying data and protocols for different EVs. This is where Bamomas battery analytics software simplifies the process by providing battery health information which, in this case, helps Austrian Post with optimizing the operations of its fleet.

One of the major learnings from the project was that the vehicles were being used to only part of their capacity and not the full battery capacity. Even the higher aged batteries had a battery SoH of just below 80% which led to the hypothesis that the 10 year lifespan of the battery can be extended, resulting in significant cost savings for Post. Moreover, the immediate view of battery health status also helps prevent any downtime or failures.

In this phase of the project, Bamomas focuses on 350 electric vehicles of the Post fleet, which are the oldest vehicles introduced into the fleet between 2014 and 2016, as these vehicles are the ones which are first expected to be phased out from the fleet. Bamomas and Post aim to expand the battery fleet analytics solution to all the EVs which would benefit from insights about battery state of health.
